"Fire Horses" the Book

The retired Firefighters attending a wedding in a small northern Michigan city were unaware of the danger they were about to encounter. All available units in the city had been called to battle a huge blaze at the state university. A fire occurs at the town hospital. People are trapped and help is needed. The old Firefighters are called on to fight one last fire. They must rely on all the knowledge and expertise they had acquired during their working years. This is a story about the sacrifice, camaraderie, and dedication that is the essence of every Firefighter's soul.

Fire Horses (Chapter 20 Excerpt)

When the civilians directed water into the first floor window they created a dangerous situation for Danny and Barkley. They had fought their way down a long hallway and around a corner. They were at the end of another corridor and close to the sizzling propane tanks that were about to exploded. They were directing water onto the howling containers. The fire behind them had snaked along the ceiling and managed to vent out a window. When the men outside hit the window with a hose stream it changed the dynamics of the fire. Both Firefighters sensed the change. The swirling movement of the smoke and a rise in the temperature told them the fire was moving in another direction. If it was headed toward them they would have to abandon their present position and get out of the building quickly. It was a worrisome dilemma.

Barkley yelled, "Goddamn it Danny we can't go. Joe is depending on us."

"I know. I know. But we're dead too if the fire cuts us off. Why don't I stay here and you go back and check it out. Take your line with you. Maybe you can roll the fire back. I'll keep cooling these fricken tanks."

"You're right. It looks like our only option. I'm going back but if I yell for you to get out you have to promise me you'll do it. Just drop your line and bail out. We can use my line to fight our way out."
