Anatomy of Forcible Entry
When I started on the job it was easy to get into a burning dwelling. Many times the door would be left unlocked. Not so for the present day Firefighter. Crime has forced property owners to go to extremes in protecting their properties. It is not only difficult to gain entry to buildings, it is dangerous once Firefighters are inside. Windows are boarded up and many commercial structures have used concrete blocks to seal up any exposed openings. It makes fighting a fire with an interior attack a highly specialized process.
Firefighter Dennis Walus sent photos of a fire in Detroit where Firefighters show their expertise in gaining entry to a dwelling fire. The dwelling has been protected by barred doors and screened windows. Getting in was difficult but not a problem for Detroit Firefighters.
